A honorable life

Two days after being freed from Assad’s regime, a Dutch filmmaker interviews a destitute Syrian man in his documentary series, Danny on the Spot (NTR). The man explains how his children process ammunition near an abandoned missile depot to earn enough for bread and water. When asked what he would do if Israel bombed the site while he and his children were working, he responds: “I leave it to fate. Death is more honorable and better than this life.”

Are the lives of the Syrian man and his children less honorable and worse than death? What about the lives of the ‘more fortunate,’ who continue to make unconscious decisions while knowing, deep down, that they take mental shortcuts for temporary and superficial satisfaction?
